Enteropeptidase (EP), a key serine protease, is primarily synthesised within the microvilli of small intestinal mucosal cells and secreted into the intestinal lumen. Its principal function is to recognise and activate trypsinogen, converting it into active trypsin and thereby initiating the entire protein digestion process. Enteropeptidase activity is regulated by multiple factors, including pH, bile acids, and other intestinal proteases. Its activity correlates with certain pathological states, such as pancreatitis or intestinal dysfunction, leading to protein malabsorption.
