Photosystem II (PSII) is a key photosynthetic complex primarily located in the thylakoid membranes of plants, algae, and certain bacteria. PSII is responsible for absorbing and converting light energy, catalysing the photochemical reaction that splits water into oxygen, protons, and electrons—the first step in the light-dependent reactions of photosynthesis. PSII comprises multiple protein subunits and pigment molecules, with the D1 and D2 subunits forming its core components.
