Meclocycline is a tetracycline antibiotic with broad antimicrobial activity. Meclocycline inhibits lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release and cell toxicity induced by expression of htt-N63-148Q, a mutant form of the huntingtin gene, without altering htt-N63-148Q protein levels in PC12 cells.

Meclocycline sulfosalicylate salt (Mecloderm), a tetracycline antibiotic, is used topically (i.e. for skin infections) as it is totally insoluble in water and may damage kidney and liver if given systemically.

Demeclocycline binds to bacterial 30S ribosomal subunit and prevents binding of aminoacyl-tRNA to the mRNA-ribosome complex, thereby inhibiting protein synthesis. Demeclocycline also inhibits the effect of vasopressin on the renal tubules, thereby causing diuresis.
