The Gelsemiaceae family belongs to the order Gentianales within the class Magnoliopsida and is primarily distributed in the tropical and subtropical regions of Asia, the Americas, and Africa. Most species in this family are woody vines or shrubs; some are used medicinally for their properties in dispelling wind and toxins, resolving nodules and reducing swelling, and relieving pain. Among them, Gelsemium is used medicinally; the entire plant is utilized to treat conditions such as scabies and eczema, either by applying a pounded poultice externally or by washing the affected area with a decoction. To date, natural compounds such as indole alkaloids and triterpenes have been isolated from this family, offering broad prospects for future applications.
