e. histolytica

Jatrorrhizine (neprotin) is a protoberberine alkaloid isolated from Enantia chlorantha (Annonaceae) and other species. It was found to have antimicrobial and antifungal activity. It binds and noncompetitively inhibits monoamine oxidase (IC50 4 micromolar for MAO-A and 62 for MAO-B).

Jatrorrhizine chloride (Neprotine chloride) is a potent and orally active uptake-2 transporter inhibitor. It exhibits a critical neuroprotective role in H2O2-induced apoptosis via inhibition of the MAPK pathway in HT22 hippocampal neurons.

Thalifendine chloride is a metabolite of berberine, wherein the methoxy group at the C-10 position undergoes demethylation by CYP51. It exhibits cytotoxicity against P-388 mouse leukaemia cells (ED₅₀ = 0.84 μM) and demonstrates weak inhibitory activity against Plasmodium falciparum.

LL-37 (18-37), an antimicrobial peptide fragment of LL-37, exhibits activity against S. aureus and C. albicans, with minimum lethal concentrations of 4 µM and 10 µM, respectively. Additionally, it inhibits E. histolytica trophozoites growth at concentrations between 10 to 50 µM.
