Paulowniaceae

Paulowniaceae is a small family of flowering plants best known for the genus Paulownia, fast-growing trees widely cultivated for timber, ecological restoration, and carbon sequestration. These plants produce bioactive compounds such as iridoids, phenolic acids, flavonoids, and phenylethanoid glycosides. In biomedical research, Paulowniaceae is increasingly studied for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, hepatoprotective, and antimicrobial activities. Its rapid growth and high biomass production also make it relevant for sustainable bioresource development and phytochemical extraction at scale. From a pharmacognostic perspective, Paulownia species provide valuable lead compounds for liver protection and oxidative stress-related disease models, linking ecological productivity with medicinal potential.

Diplacone (DP) is a geranylated flavonoid compound that is naturally found in the fruit of Paulownia tomentosa. Diplacone possesses anti-inflammatory and free radical-scavenging (anti-radical) activity. Diplacone has been investigated for its potential anticancer activity, particularly in studies involving A549 human lung cancer cells, where it demonstrated inhibitory effects on cancer cell growth and survival.
