Lycopodiales

Lycopodiales is an ancient order of vascular plants belonging to lycophytes, including club mosses such as Lycopodium. These plants produce unique secondary metabolites such as alkaloids (notably lycopodine-type compounds), flavonoids, and terpenoids. In biomedical research, Lycopodiales is notable for neuroactive, anti-inflammatory, and cytotoxic properties, with some alkaloids studied for potential effects on the nervous system and cancer models. As one of the earliest diverging vascular plant lineages, it provides important insight into the evolution of plant chemical defenses and early biosynthetic pathways.
