Nystatin A1, a polyene macrolide (antibiotic), is isolated from the Streptomyces noursei bacterium. It functions by binding with ergosterol on fungal cell membranes, enhancing membrane permeability, and consequently causing leakage of cellular contents, which inhibits fungal growth and reproduction.
