γ-glu-cys

γ-Glu-Cys is an intermediate in glutathione (GSH) synthesis.1It is formed by ATP-dependent condensation of cysteine and glutamate by γ-glutamylcysteine synthetase. γ-Glu-Cys is also an essential component of phytochelatins, the heavy metal detoxifying enzymes in plants.2

Gamma-Glutamylcysteine is a natural dipeptide containing cysteine and glutamic acid, serving as a precursor to glutathione (GSH) and a cofactor for glutathione peroxidase (GPx). Gamma-Glutamylcysteine exhibits anti-inflammatory effects by upregulating IL-10 whilst downregulating TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-1β.

Gamma-glutamylcysteine ammonium is a crucial intermediate in the biosynthesis of Glutathione and is involved in the synthesis of Phytochelatin in plants.

Phytochelatin 4 (PC 4) a glutathione derived peptide and heavy metal detoxifier/chelator consisting of 4 units of glu - cys and generated by PC synthase, is tolerant to Cd (cadmium) and is sequestered in vesicles after complexation with heavy metals.
