Delesseriaceae

Delesseriaceae is a family of red algae (Rhodophyta), primarily found in marine environments, especially in temperate and tropical coastal waters. Members of this family produce sulfated polysaccharides, halogenated secondary metabolites, and unique pigments such as phycoerythrin that contribute to their distinctive red coloration. In biomedical research, Delesseriaceae is of interest due to its antioxidant, antiviral, anticoagulant, and immunomodulatory activities, largely driven by its sulfated polysaccharide content. These compounds are being explored for applications in anti-inflammatory therapies, drug delivery systems, and functional biomaterials. As part of marine biodiversity, Delesseriaceae also provides chemically unique structures that expand the diversity of natural product libraries for pharmaceutical screening.
