The Thoeris system, named after the Egyptian goddess of fertility and protection, is a widespread anti-phage immune defense system found in bacteria and archaea. It is part of the bacterial "Abortive Infection" (AbortionInfection, Abi) mechanisms: when a single bacterium detects phage invasion, it initiates a self-destruct program that prevents phage replication and spread, thus protecting the surrounding bacterial community from infection.
