It has been used for several hundred years as a traditional Chinese herb to treat stranguria, rheumatoid arthritis-associated edema, chronic hepatitis, nephritis, chronic arthritis, and traumatic hemorrhage. It is a particularly rich source of oligostilbenes, flavonoids, and anthocyanins, phytochemicals that are associated with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and cardioprotective activities.
