SMAP-29 is a broad spectrum antibacterial and antifungal α-helical cathelicidin-derived peptide with strong potential as an antiinfective agent. It effectively permeabilizes bacterial membranes and induces significant alterations in the surface morphology of susceptible microorganisms.

SMAP 29, a bactericidal antimicrobial peptide and a cleavage product from the C-terminus of an ovine cathelicidin prepropeptide, is effective against P. aeruginosa strain PAO1 in both low- and high-salt conditions, as demonstrated in an energy-dependent luminescence assay with half-maximal effective concentrations (EC50s) of 0.05 and 0.06 µM, respectively. Additionally, it induces hemolysis in ovine red blood cells in a concentration-dependent manner.

SMAP-18, an 18-amino acid residue peptide amide, is a biologically active truncated variant of Sheep myeloid antimicrobial peptide-29 (SMAP-29). It retains potent antimicrobial activity against Pseudomonas strains, other Gram-negative bacteria, and multidrug-resistant pathogens. Notably, SMAP-18 exhibits increased cell selectivity relative to the parent peptide SMAP-29 due to its reduced hemolytic activity while maintaining its antimicrobial efficacy.
