Cetalkonium-d5chloride (Benzyldimethylhexadecylammonium-d5chloride) is a deuterium-labeled version of Cetalkonium chloride, an ammonium salt preservative used in studies of infections in the mouth, throat, and eyes. It exhibits anti-inflammatory properties and acts as a cationic surfactant, enhancing drug retention and bioavailability on the corneal surface. Cetalkonium chloride disrupts bacterial cell membrane integrity by interacting with the negative charges on the membranes, causing leakage of cell contents and ultimately leading to bacterial death.
