Cytokines generally perform their biological functions by binding to the corresponding cytokine receptors on the cell surface. When a cytokine binds to its receptor, it initiates complex intracellular molecular interactions that ultimately lead to changes in cellular gene transcription. According to the structure of the cytokine receptor, it can be divided into different families or superfamilies, including immunoglobulin (Ig) superfamily, type I cytokine receptor, type II cytokine receptor, tumor necrosis factor receptor (TNFR) superfamily, and chemokine receptor.
