Cholesteryl γ-aminobutyrate is a prodrug of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA). It inhibits the excitatory discharge of pyramidal cells in the hippocampal CA1 region. Moreover, Cholesteryl γ-aminobutyrate reduces open-field activity in both mice and rats in a dose-dependent manner and suppresses Bicuculline-induced seizures in mice. This compound is useful for studying central nervous system disorders related to impaired GABAergic neuronal function.
