| Description | Gentamicin (Centicin) is a broad-spectrum aminoglycoside antibiotic with antibacterial activity, inhibiting the growth of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, and can be used to study ocular infections. |
| In vitro | Gentamicin was dissolved in EMEM and used in a final concentration of 200 μg/ml. All bacterial strains grew in the absence of antibiotics and all were grossly inhibited by Gentamicin. Gentamicin is superior to penicillin and streptomycin for control of bacterial growth in tissue culture. Its superiority in controlling P. aeruginosa, Proteus sp., and S. faecalis organisms. To this list may now be added Bacillus cereus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Aeromonas, Enterobacter, Serratia, Citrobacter, and Alcaligenes faecalis. [1] |
| In vivo | In vivo efficacy of oxiconazole and Gentamicin combination in a murine superficial skin infection model. The combination of oxiconazole (2%) and Gentamicin (0.1%) reduced the bacterial load in skin by ~2.77 log10 CFU/gm and Gentamicin (~2.06 log10 CFU/gm) alone. These results indicate that the combination of Oxiconazole with gentamicin is potently active in vivo against S. aureus skin infections. [2] |
