| Description | Sodium alginate is a natural water-soluble polysaccharide extracted from brown seaweed species. Sodium alginate possesses prominent thickening, stabilizing, and gelling properties and is extensively utilized in food science applications, including molecular gastronomy. Sodium alginate is additionally applicable to biomaterial engineering, hydrogel formation, controlled-release systems, tissue engineering, and polysaccharide-based biomedical research. |
| In vivo | Sodium alginate (0.1-0.5 mL; parietal periosteum, intradermal and subcutaneous injection once) causes granulomatous reactions, including macrophage recruitment, but fewer macrophages and granulomatous reactions at 24 weeks in Wistar rats. [1] |
