Dragendorff reagent can detect alkaloids and other nitrogen-containing compounds. It is a bismuth potassium iodide solution composed of basic bismuth nitrate (Bi(NO3)3), tartaric acid (HY-N2436), and potassium iodide (KI). When Dragendorff reagent comes into contact with alkaloids, it forms an orange or orangish-red precipitate.
