The human GTPBP3 is a deafness associated homolog of yeast MSS1. The allelic variants in GTPBP3 could modulate the phenotypic manifestation of human mitochondrial A1555G mutation. GTPBP3 may be involved in the 5 carboxymethylaminomethyl modification (mnm(5)s(2)U34) of the wobble uridine base in mitochondrial tRNAs.
