Carboxylesterase (CaEs, CarE, EC 3.1.1.1) is a multigene family. Its gene products are localized in the endoplasmic reticulum of various tissues and are widely distributed in tissues and organs, belonging to the serine hydrolase family. Carboxylesterases can effectively catalyze the hydrolysis of ester and amide compounds but cannot catalyze the hydrolysis of acetylcholine and its analogs. CarE is involved in the detoxification and metabolism of various drugs, environmental toxins, and carcinogens, Carboxylesterase also participates in lipid transport and metabolism.
