In vitro | Microcystins, toxic compounds generated during cyanobacterial blooms related to water eutrophication[2], demonstrate significant inhibition of both type 1 (IC50=1.7 nM) and type 2A (IC50=0.04 nM) protein phosphatases, exceeding the inhibitory efficacy of okadaic acid by more than tenfold under identical conditions. Remarkably, microcystin-LR completely inhibits type 2A protein phosphatases in diluted mammalian cell extracts at a concentration of 0.5 nM, whereas type 1 phosphatases exhibit minimal inhibition at the same concentration[1]. |
