Research Background | Synaptophysin (SYP) is an integral membrane protein of synaptic vesicles and is ubiquitously expressed in neurons throughout the brain, such as small presynaptic vesicles of the nerve cells and in microvesicles of the neuroendocrine cells. SYP is a major protein of neurotransmitter-containing vesicles spanning the membrane four times and contributing to various aspects of the synaptic vesicle cycle. SYP is involved in the release of neurotransmitters, synaptic plasticity, and the formation and recycling of synaptic vesicles. SYP may serve as a specific marker of synaptic proteins. As Syp expression is correlated with synaptogenesis during the development of the central nervous system, the expression of Syp is considered to be a critical aspect of neuronal maturation and circuit formation. |
