Research BackgroundThis gene encodes a mitochondrially-localized protein that has sequence similarity to prokaryotic beta-lactamases. Many of the residues responsible for beta-lactamase activity are not conserved in this protein, suggesting it may have a different enzymatic function. Increased expression of the related mouse gene was found to be associated with obesity. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding different protein isoforms. Antigen Details
Gene Name
LACTB
Gene ID
Protein Name
Serine beta-lactamase-like protein LACTB, mitochondrial
Function
LACTB is a protein from the large 39S subunit of the mitochondrial ribosome (mitoribosome). It has some sequence similarity to prokaryotic beta-lactamases but most of the residues that are responsible for the beta-lactamase activity are not conserved between the two proteins. It is expressed predominantly in skeletal muscle. There are two named isoforms.
