Description
Monensin is an orally active natural antibiotic that also functions as an ion carrier mediating Na+/H+ exchange and a Wnt inhibitor, effective against Gram-positive bacteria, Plasmodium falciparum, and certain viruses.
In vitro
Monensin (1-5 μM; 48 hours) can significantly reduce the viability of SCC9, SCC25, and GM-38 cells in a dose-dependent manner [1].
Monensin (1 or 5 μM; 24 hours) can induce a strong apoptotic response in SCC25 cells [1].
Monensin (0.1 or 1 μM; 24 hours) can inhibit pEGFR and its downstream targets pAKT and pERK in SCC9 and SCC25 cells [1].
In vivo
Monensin (10 mg/kg, administered orally, daily for 6 weeks) can inhibit the progression of intestinal tumors in multiple intestinal neoplasia (Min) mice, with no toxic effects observed on normal intestinal mucosa during the experiment [2].
